Gisborne Market this weekend 4th November

Bambousa Multiplex cv. or Silverstripe Bamboo
Silverstripe Bamboo

We always have a great time at the Gisborne market as it is the closest to our Bamboo Creations Nursery.  This is great fun for all the family including the kids. It is held at Howey Reserve Gisborne along the service roads of Aitken and Hamilton Streets between 9am and 2pm. Including Bamboo Creations Nursery, the Gisborne Market has over 250 stalls offering a large range of products. The town of Gisborne benefit from the market. Funds raised from the market have been given to the local community groups such as the SES, CFA, Scouts etc. Come along, say hello to us at Bamboo Creations Nursery and support the local area.

We will be taking with us lots of Speedy Screen bamboo (Dendrocalamopsis Oldhamii) and Siverstipe (Bambusa Multiplex cv.).  Now is a great time to plant these bamboo and others in the range.  Talk to us about the different types of bamboo and the one that would suit your requirements.

Dendrocalamopsis Oldhamii or Speedy Screen Bamboo
Speedy Screen Bamboo
As we have blogged before, Dendrocalamopsis Oldhamii is also known as Speedy Screen Bamboo due to its growing speed.  A great bamboo to plant with the kids and monitor its growth (just like Jack and the Beanstalk). Measure the bamboo and keep a table of its growth just like you measure the kids on the back of the door.

Don't forget about our nursery in Riddells Creek. We can show you all the different bamboo varieties (you will be amazed at the different types).  We do like you to ring before-hand (same day appointments are available) so we can arrange a time that suits you to give you our undivided attention. So make sure you come with lots of questions about bamboo and how it can fit in to your own garden.

Bamboo Jargon

Cream stripe bamboo or Bambusa albo minorBamboo Creations Victoria have not go any market and expo commitments over the next couple of weeks so now is a great time to come and visit our Nursery to see the full range of bamboo available. When you come to our nursery bring along all your Bamboo questions and we will try and answer them and help with your bamboo choices.

Here are a few bamboo terms and what they mean to make enjoying your bamboo even greater. If you would like to know the meaning of other terms that you have heard then please email info@bamboo-plants.com.au or leave a comment on this blog entry.

Culm: A bamboo culm is the term used for the stem of the bamboo plant. The interest fact is that these grow from the ground at their full diameter.  This is different to trees as branches start thinner and thicken up during their growing season. Over years the bamboo culm get harder to a point where some countries use bamboo culms in construction.

Culm Leaf: The protective leaves that cover the emerging shoot or Culm

Rhizome: This is the part of the bamboo that lives underground and controls the characteristics of the bamboo. This will determine if the bamboo plant is a clumping type or running type. The stems or culms then grow from the underground rhizome.

Nepalese Blue Bamboo or Himalayacalamus porcatus
Nepalese Blue Bamboo with blue coloured culms

This sunday (7th October) we are at the Flemington Market.  The Flemington market is held at the Flemington Race Course. Flemington Racecourse Market provides the best of regional Victorian produce (including Bamboo Creations Victoria) and craft work just around the corner for millions of Melburnians. With the resources of the Flemington Racecourse at our disposal, parking space is never a problem.

One of the many bamboo's we will be taking to this market is the Nepalese Blue Bamboo.  Notice in the picture on the right. The powdered culms gives it a blue colour - very stunning.  This is a clumping bamboo type and has a height of approximately 3.5 - 4 metres.  Check out our handy bamboo guide on our website (in the info page).

Himalayacalamus porcatus or Nepalese Blue BambooDon't forget about our free delivery service.  If you pre-order any plants we can take these to one of our markets free of charge for you to pick up.  Also, if you need bamboo but are not ready to plant them yet we can store them at our Nursery for you.  All we need is a deposit and we will store them for up to a month until you are ready to plant.
