Gracilis, that wonderful screening bamboo

Gracilis bamboo used as a green screen for driveway supplied by Bamboo Creations Victoria
Gracilis Bamboo used to create a driveway screen in under 2 years
We have spoken about Gracilis before but look at these photos.  In less than 2 years there is a beautiful green screen down the driveway.  This provides excellent privacy and also a wind barrier.

The botanical name for this versatile bamboo is Bambusa textilis var. gracilis with a common name of Slender Weavers bamboo.  We use the word versatile as it quite drought tolerant and can also handle very cold temperatures. This means it is perfect for our country given the varied temperatures and conditions this plant has to contend with.

This is a clumping type of bamboo as can be seen by these pictures. The culms clump together to build that perfect hedge or screen.  We can give more information about how many you need to plant to create the desired screen at your property.

This bamboo has a maximum height of approximately 6 to 8 metres which is sufficient to hide neighbouring buildings.  Another reason this bamboo is great for screening is it is very fast growing. The picture of the driveway screen above show that this screen was created in about 1.5 years.

As always, we are just at the end of the phone if you have any queries about this bamboo or any other bamboo (1300 654 454).  You can also come to our nursery to see this an our other bamboo varieties, or you can visit at one of our many different markets and expos.

Seymour Alternative Farming Expo

Bamboo Creations Victoria at Seymour alternative farming expo in February 2015
Bamboo Creations Victoria attending Seymour Expo
Yes, The Seymour Alternative Farming expo is here again. It is a massive event that needs 3 days for people to see everything.  It is running from the 20th until the 22nd of February 2015 (that is this weekend starting on Friday). This runs from 9am until 5pm daily. It is held in Kings Park on Tallarook Street in Seymour.

Seymour is a lovely drive up the Hume Highway or a more scenic route is up through Yea on the Goulburn Valley Highway.

According to the Seymour Alternative Farming expo website, this event has more than 450 exhibitors. This event also has a lecture series so you can learn a few things while looking at and purchasing the latest products. Come up and say hello, we would love to see you at Seymour. Our website has all the dates of this and other events with a link to each of the individual events websites.

Did you know?

We will be taking to Seymour a few bamboo that can be used for timber and some that are edible.  Yes that is correct you can eat some types of bamboo.

Tall Bamboo with think canes are used for timber.  This is very handy due to the fast growing nature of bamboo.  You can quickly grow very large bamboo canes that can be used to build with.  You can use the timber for building fences or other structures.  We have seen overseas that some people even use bamboo for scaffolding up the side of buildings for building maintenance.  An example is the pictures in our website photo gallery (Photos from our Visits). In Bali a house has been built using only Bamboo.

Clever uses of Nepalese Blue

Clever use of Nepalese Blue in house design
Nepalese Blue Bamboo as a green wall
People are using Bamboo in really amazing and innovative ways.  The picture on the right shows how people in Bendigo have brought the outside in.  They have created a glass panel looking out to a lovely green screen outside (clever as this will be green without needing painting). These pictures also show the growth rate of this stunning bamboo as these were planted in 2013. So in no time, all you will be able to see from the inside is green.

Nepalese Blue bamboo is the common name for Himalayacalamus Porcatus Bamboo.  This is a clumping type of bamboo with a maximum height of about 4 metres.  This bamboo gets its common name from the fact that the canes have a fantastic blue colour (refer to picture below).
